Abstract. The article explains the procedure and the features of long cycle phases in economy. The article presents the classification of long cycle theories which divides them into exogenous and endogenous, depending on the ratio of the main reason for the long cycle existence in the economic system. The authors prove that the basis of these theories is represented by the formation and development of economic mode - complex  of productions and related activities, based on current technologies of general application (mode industry) and socio-economic relations (mode), providing the opportunities of their implementation and expansion. The authors explain why technological mode cannot exist apart from the social and economic one. It is shown that the industry is a form of domination of economic mode in the economy, reflecting its contribution to the overall evolution of the global economic system. The article presents characteristics of social structures interchanging each other successively in the course of evolution and the development of science and technical progress.
