Abstract. The development of the national economy, under modern challenges, largely depends on the sustainability and uniformity of regional and sectoral economic development. The purpose of the study is to assess indicators of regional sustainability and construct a positioning map. The subject of the research is the organizational and economic conditions that arise during economic activities in various regions. Statistical data processing methods were applied – factor and cluster analysis. The study evaluates the sustainability of Russian regions based on a system of indicators: GRP per capita, degree of depreciation of fixed assets, profitability of assets in manufacturing industries, profitability of sold products, goods, and services in the manufacturing industry, level of innovative activity, and indices of agricultural production. It examines how each indicator affects the sustainability of the economic system. Based on factor analysis, a positioning map of regions by sustainability was constructed. To build the map, unnormalized latent variables “economic efficiency” and “investment-innovation potential” were calculated. Based on the calculations, the regions of Russia were divided into four clusters. The first cluster is absolutely sustainable regions. The second cluster is sustainable regions. The third cluster is relatively sustainable regions. The fourth cluster is unsustainable regions. The obtained results allowed identifying regions with sustainability violations. For such regions, recommendations for adjusting economic policy are proposed.
